[ Caleb and Essek have something special going on, Fjord hasn't been paying close attention out of respect for their privacy (they prefer the seclusion of another house, after all) but he can see echoes of the relationship he has built with Molly there. Less grimly forged, perhaps. Fjord has resolved himself to do everything on his card, whether he wants to or not; there isn't a situation where he wouldn't sacrifice his comfort if it meant the ability to protect his friends, scarred up because of the monsters in the jungle he collects spell components around or awkward in the bedroom.
